Tattoos are often viewed as a rite of passage for many young adults. The tradition dates back thousands of years, and although it was once frowned upon, it has become more mainstream in recent years. Many adults view tattooing as a form of self-expression.

20% of adults age 18 + have at least one tattoo, while roughly 14% have two or more tattoos. 

40% of American households report that at least one person in the home has a tattoo. 

22% of millennials aged 18-24 have reported having at least 1 tattoo. 

58% of women have a visible or not-so-visible tattoo.

41% of men say they have a tattoo

27% of women who have tattoos say they prefer to tattoo their ankle, while 25% of women opt for their upper back. 

75% of men opt of tattoo their arms. 

The tattoo industry is a billion dollar industry; in 2014 the tattoo industry reported $3 billion in revenue.
